Basic Xiangqi Checkmate Patterns: Finding Forcing Moves

Build tactical awareness with basic Xiangqi mating patterns: checks, escape squares, and defensive resources.

Start with checks

When looking for tactics, list checks first. A check forces a reply, so it reduces the number of variations you must calculate.

After each check, test three defenses: the General moves, the checking piece is captured, or the line is blocked.

Limit the General’s escape

Checks are strongest when the palace squares are occupied or controlled. Chariots and Cannons combine well to control ranks and files.

Watch the Advisors and Elephants: they may shield the General or accidentally take away escape squares.

Practice effectively

Do not reveal the answer immediately. Set a short clock, write down candidate moves, and explain why each defense fails.

Then replay the position against AI to turn the pattern into practical instinct.
