Central Cannon in Xiangqi: Ideas and Opening Plans

Learn the Central Cannon opening: central pressure, piece development, and practical principles for avoiding wasted moves.

What is the Central Cannon?

The Central Cannon develops a Cannon to the central file early, creating direct pressure toward the enemy General. It is one of Xiangqi’s best-known openings.

Its purpose is not an immediate attack at any cost, but space and a position that demands a response.

Three priorities after Central Cannon

Develop your Horses, make room for the Chariots, and keep a sound defense around your General. A strong move usually develops a piece or protects a weakness.

Avoid moving the same piece repeatedly while other pieces remain undeveloped.

When to change your plan

Against a solid Screen Horse defense or an early Cannon exchange, focus on Chariot development and open files instead.

Do not force a familiar attack when the position no longer supports it.
